Solaris 10 update 6 10/08

Post by cah »

I received an email from SUN Micro Systems on November 12, 2008 saying there is a new release available.

It is Solaris 10 Update 6 10/08. It has some new features:

New Release Highlights

The Solaris 10 10/08 Operating System now includes the following:

ZFS boot on x86 and SPARC systems
• Support for new Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron, UltraSPARC and SPARC64 processor based systems
• Virtualization enhancements such as Solaris Containers upgrade on attach
• Networking and security enhancements
• Device drivers for the latest network cards and other peripherals

The reason why I emphasize ZFS is this is a feature we talked about at SUN training I went in August. The instructor predicted this feature would be available in update 6 and it did come out with the feature. This is a very important feature for ZFS to replace UFS with the capability of making the boot disk ZFS. No more SVM/SDS and any other volume managers are needed. The management is easier and more flexible and powerful.

I downloaded the ISO images from SUN on November 12, 2008 and burned DVDs for SPARC and x86 platforms and a companion CD yesterday (November 19, 2008). I am planning to install it on an x86 platform to try out the ZFS part to see how friendly it is.

Hopefully, this will make me more experienced for any future opportunities.

When I was trying to install this new version to a spare PC at home, I then realized it does not recognize DVD ROM. I have to make this new version to CDs before I can even start the installation process.

I have made the CDs.
I will see if I get a chance to work on it during Thanksgiving weekend.
